Pizza places, for example, can use their website to take orders, or offer click-to-call services (much like we have on this site) so that people get that instant gratification of bending the internet to their will. A good measure of online customer service can save you hundreds if not thousands of dollars a month in phone charges, not to mention the time it takes to field those questions, or the income you would have to pay to others to take those calls for you. By merely having a chat option for questions on your site, you can effectively keep the answers coming in order to placate your customers. Even having a simple support email can give your loyal buyers a measure of comfort, knowing that they have a way to get in touch with you.
The primary way of course though, to make sales over the internet is to have an inventory management system tied in with a shopping cart. This then links to a payments processor (the popular and simple ones being PayPal and Google Checkout) that takes the credit card information from the consumer, places the order in your queue, and then you (or a manufacturer) fulfills that order and sends it to the customer. Most of the time, this is the kind of thing we set up for small businesses that want to sell their products over the internet.
But there are other ways too. Mobile payments are now becoming a huge business. Imagine being able to hand-deliver a product to a customer YOURSELF and then taking the payment from them once you get it to them. Your customer would be blown away by such a prospect (you may be too) but it is totally possible thanks to new technologies by companies like Square which use your smartphone and an accessory to let someone swipe their credit card, just like they would at the register! It's pretty powerful stuff.
